And so another adventure begins...

We're headed up I-75N out of Atlanta. Destination: Estes Park, Colorado!
We're both stoked to be on the road again, reminiscent of out trip last year.
We've made a few cragin' wagon adjustments, and have a further refined packing system, so things should go relatively smoothly.

Fat Carolina Ice

The ice was FAT in North Carolina, so John, Sonya, Julie and I went to Winding Stair gap. The ice conditions were the best I've seen in the south: there was barely any running water b/c all moisture on the rock and in the air frozen. The water fall we climbed was over 35 meters( approx 130ft) tall. We were the first ones there so we set up on the tallest part of the wall. Later in the day we were joined by two other climbers that we knew from GA and we also had a drive by from two of our favorite Boat Rock climbers Jason & Brooke (none of us knew the others were going to be there). Sweeeet!. It was an awesome day.

Groover

We started the day meeting, in Decatur GA at 5:00 AM, Unfortunately, the first pitch of the day was my forgetting that my storage unit didn't open until 6AM, meaning that I had to climb the fence at storage in order to retrieve my camping gear.
After a few hours in the car we arrived at Camp Stegg, just outside of Cashiers NC. Camp Stegg is kind of like Camp 4 but way cooler. We caught Stegg and James in the parking lot/camp before they went in to Big Green (Big Green is another tall scary cliff in North Carolina). They were of course working on a ANOTHER "First Ascent."
Before Shannon Stegg left, we took a picture of his topo of Groover (5.8), a route at Laurel Knob we planned to climb that day. I climbed Grover once before, but I thought it would be a good idea to snap a pic of the topo just to be on the safer side.
We kept a casual pace all day, taking it easy on the climbers trail, trying not to get to worked. When we arrived at the base of the climb there were two parties were ahead of us. After about 45 minutes we started climbing.
The climbing was varied and sustained: Crack, slab, water groove and face climbing. The pitches were long. Two of them over 60 meters. John lead the famous 4th crux pitch and linked it with the 5th pitch. Sweet!
After approximately 800 ft of rappelling we were back on the ground in the dark. We decided to hike out "Secret" Canyon instead of taking the climbers' trail back.
After a long hike we were back in camp at about 9:30 PM. Shannon was nice enough to cook some steak and bagels for us! We were pretty tired and very thankful for the food. Thanks Shannon! We all sat around the fire and told climbing stories and split the one beer we had. Then we CRASHED!

Homeward bound...

We decided to come home~ it has been an exciting and wonderful trip
~ we've been through several states and national parks
~ we've met a ton of people
~we've sampled a lot of different climbing areas
~ Greg drove over 7000 miles
~ we had only one run in with a dangerous animal
~ we've had some awesome experiences!

I tried to take pics of the welcome signs of each state~ but ironically we don't have pictures of the states which we spent the most time in ~ California and Colorado...
